All About the Easy Going Quilt Pattern

"Easy Going" might just be the perfect name for this pattern. It's a pretty laid back pattern as far as quilt patterns go. The large blocks make this quilt come together pretty quick and, yes, there are half square triangles. But they are so large, and so few, do they even count? Let's break down the Easy Going Quilt Pattern and see why it might just be the star quilt pattern we have all been waiting for.

First of all, when I think of star quilt patterns, I think of repeating stars and a more traditional star quilt. Easy Going might use a traditional sawtooth star block, but it definitely has a modern feel and take.

When I designed this quilt I was playing around with the idea of framing the night sky. Just like any photographer knows you have to choose what to include in the frame of the camera when shooting a photo, what to highlight, what adds to the image and what is just wasted space. Easy Going follows the idea of trying to get as much as possible in the frame of the quilt, but also choosing which part to cut out.

You can see one full star and then parts of three others fit into the quilt. Two different star blocks are in the quilt to add interest, but also to allow for large print fabrics to be showcased.

The twin size quilt is slightly different than the other sizes. You can see the difference below.

There are eight different fabrics used in the quilt. Fabric four (the blue fabric in the diagram above) is especially meant for small panels or large prints. There are no seams in this fabric so it isn't cut up and put together.

The pattern looks great with solid fabrics and small print fabrics as well. Most of the versions I made have some solid or small print in it.

As I said the quilt does use half square triangles throughout, but with so few and since they are so large they come together quite easily and quickly. I included an extra 1/2 inch of fabrics when sewing the half square triangles to give more trimming room since such large blocks can sometimes be tricky to trim.

The other quilt I made uses all patterns of varying sizes. You can see images of this quilt below.

I love how the quilt looks with patterned fabrics! I tried to make to spread out the colors in the quilt so not all the same colors are in the same section of the quilt.

The Easy Going Quilt Pattern includes four sizes:
  • Baby 36 in. x 42 in.
  • Throw 60 in. x 70 in.
  • Twin 70 in. x 98 in.
  • Queen 90 in. x 105 in.

The samples shown above are the throw size. It's a nice large quilt which is what I love in a throw. I mean, a throw quilt needs to be large so it can be curled up with on the couch.

Since the pattern is listed as a beginner quilt, any quilter should be able to tackle this pattern. You just might require a little help with the half square triangles, especially trimming the larger sizes.
