Today I'm telling you about my modern quilt pattern for the beginner quilter. This is perfect for the quilter who is just learning about fabric and sewing. Why? Because you can use three different cuts of fabric to make the quilt.
That's right, the Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern if fat quarter, 2 1/2 inch precut and yardage friendly.
This means if you are an experienced quilter you will most likely have some fabric in your stash to work for this pattern. If you are a new quilter, then this is a good time to learn about different cuts of fabric which might seem a little scary.
For instance, a lot of time beginner quilters find 2 1/2 inch precut strips (also known as Jelly Rolls) overwhelming because they have never used them.
The Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern is a great pattern for beginner quilters to step out of their box and try Jelly Rolls for the first time.
If you don't know what a Jelly Roll is, don't worry, I've got a short blog post here for you which shares about this convenient cut of fabric.
See the Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern here.
You can see from the back cover that the pattern has 6 sizes:
- Baby 32 in. x 40 in.
- Small Throw 56 in. x 64 in.
- Large Throw 64 in. x 72 in.
- Twin 72 in. x 88 in.
- Queen 88 in. x 104 in.
- King 104 in. x 104 in.
I included so many sizes because the pattern is easy to make and I thought it would be fun to make in any size.

Beginner quilters will find this is a good pattern to work on consistent 1/4 inch seams. The pattern uses strip piecing. That's when long strips of fabric are sewn together and then cut into smaller units. These units are then sewn together into larger units.
This speeds up the sewing process.
Because the first part of this quilt is a lot of sewing long strips of fabric it's a good time to slow down and make sure your seam is consistent.
If you are a beginner quilter I suggest getting a 1/4 inch foot for your machine or if your machine is compatible a magnetic seam guide. For the first several years I quilted I used a magnetic seam guide. It's an inexpensive way to make sure your seams are the correct width.

You can buy a seam guide here.
In fact, I worked with a woman at a quilt shop who had sewed years and years and said she always used a seam guide and always would. After that I thought, there's no shame in my quilting game just because I like to use a guide or 1/4 inch foot.
The Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern consists of 2 quilt blocks which alternate throughout the quilt.

Depending on the amount of fabrics used the look can be scrappy, modern, or minimalist.

It's hard for me to decide which look I like best. Each turned out so different!

This one feels very peaceful to me. I used striped woven fat quarters and replaced B and D fabrics with the natural colored Kona fabric.
You can find the fabrics to make this here.

I love how bright and modern this quilt is! These fabrics are a punch of color.
You can find the fabric to make this quilt in the small and large throw sizes here.

This quilt is all things scrappy with the bright colors and so many fabrics. This quilt was made with 2 Jelly Rolls of Honey by Alexia Abegg for Ruby Star Society.
I love all three of these quilts! Whether you are a beginner or have been quilting for years the Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern is a great pattern to try!
