Auntie Anita's Patchwork Quilt Pattern is my beginner friendly, modern quilt pattern. I would say it's a great first quilt pattern. There is no tricky anything.
Let me explain more...

Auntie Anita's Patchwork Quilt Pattern is a block based quilt pattern where half the blocks are pieced and half are background fabric.
It's fat quarter and scrap friendly. Plus, it's very easy to add fussy cut fabric. If you don't know what fussy cutting is, you can read my blog post on "Fussy Cutting 101".
Directional fabric is also easy to include. In fact, I include 2 sets of different cutting diagrams in the directions. One diagram is for fabric that has a pattern orientated horizontally. The other diagram is for fabric that has a pattern orientated vertically. This helps make sure you cut your fabric correctly.
Because of the way the blocks are formed, no seams need to be matched up until the rows of the quilt are sewn together. This means easy sewing and easy pressing.
If you are an experienced quilter then you will find this quilt to be a pretty fast make. You can easily sew an Auntie Anita's Patchwork Quilt in one day.
4 sizes are included with this pattern:
- Baby 30 in. x 36 in.
- Throw 54 in. x 63 in.
- Twin 72 in. x 90 in.
- Queen 90 in. x 108 in.
About this quilt
Auntie Anita's Patchwork Quilt Pattern design was inspired by the fabric in this quilt. You see I found this beautifully hand woven fabric in India. I decided to buy a whole bunch when I was visiting and bring it back to the US with me.
Then, I had to decide what to do with it. I wanted to design a quilt pattern where the woven fabrics were the star of the show. I didn't want the fabrics to become too jumbled together or overwhelm the quilt. These fabrics were made by artisans so I wanted to make sure the pattern showed off the fabrics.
I came up with the Auntie Anita's Patchwork Quilt Pattern. It provides a good amount of background fabric, but allows enough pieces in the blocks for the stripes to play off each other no matter which direction the stripes are going.

Woven fabric can have a tendency to easily fray when quilting and sewing with it.
I was a bit worried about this fabric. I have had issues with other woven fabrics in the past. They have frayed too fast and felt almost too fragile or thin to quilt with. However, these fabrics have a thicker weight than similar woven fabrics which means they don't fall apart easy and are just generally good quality.
Half of the fabrics in this quilt have a 1 inch stripe, the other half have a 1/3 inch stripe. The variety adds interest to the quilt in a way that stripes of all one width would not.
I used Kona in Natural for the background fabric. I thought it struck a nice neutral tone in the midst of so many colors.
This kit has been very popular in the shop. There are still a couple left. Click here to get your Auntie Anita's Patchwork Quilt Kit.
Several people have asked about the background fabric. It goes with the quilt top so well! This fabric is by Fabelism and is called Happy Checker in Golden Hour. I bought it from my local quilt shop. It's also a woven fabric which is very soft and adds so much to the quilt.
I chose one of the more neutral striped fabrics for the binding to keep the attention on the quilt. Usually I like a nice pop and bright color on the binding. But for this quilt I decided a toned down binding would be better.
I think the real magic happened in this quilt when I sent it to Kait from Knot and Thread Design. She helped me choose the panto. The one we chose is called Pendulum. It just finished the quilt off perfectly!
Look at all that texture!
If you are a beginner quilter, this is a great pattern for you! Don't be afraid to try this quilt even if it's your first one. It's a very forgiving pattern.
If you are an experienced quilter, you will find it's a great quilt pattern to make your own. Use scraps, use fat quarters, fussy cut... you decide. It's fast and fun.
