Sunflower Moonbeam with Khadi Fabrics

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you probably haven't heard of Khadi fabrics. That's because they are only made in a small portion of the world. But when I was in India I fell in love with these woven fabrics! So much so that I brought a whole bunch back with me to the US to make quilts with.

The quilt I am going to share with you today was made using the Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern and four different vibrant colors of Khadi fabrics. Each fabric was dyed just for this project and the result is a colorful quilt which stands out and shows off the design and fabric.

What is Khadi fabric?

Khadi fabric is made from handspun yarn from a natural source (cotton, wool or silk). In this case, the fabric is made from cotton. The yarn is then hand woven into fabric. Khadi fabric is only made in Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. It's known to be breathable and eco friendly.

After I ordered this batch of Khadi fabric I chose the colors I wanted and each piece of fabric was hand dyed in natural, environmentally friendly dye. All fabric is made by artisans which receive fair wages for their labor (at least from where I purchase from). So this is truly special and unique fabric!

Because we quilters are always a little nervous about sewing with new fabrics, I made sure to wash, dry and starch my fabric before starting my quilt.

Khadi fabric is so soft and has a nice texture to it, this creates a quilt with a beautiful drape and flow.

A Bit About the Sunflower Moonbeam Pattern

The Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern is a beginner friendly quilt pattern which has several variations depending on the look you want.

Read about the versions I made which are scrappy looking here or here.

Read about the version I made using fat quarters and a background fabric here

The quilt in this post is a toned down, modern version which is intended to highlight the vibrant colors of fabric and simple block based design.

You can find a copy of the Sunflower Moonbeam Quilt Pattern here

Sunflower Moonbeam is fat quarter, Jelly Roll or yardage friendly depending on which version you are making. See three different versions above in the photo.

If you don't know what a Jelly Roll is read about them here

The Sunflower Moonbeam blocks come together quickly because strip piecing is used to speed up the process. This makes for a fast finish.

Notice in the photo above some of the fabrics have small imperfections which I think adds to the character and highlights the handcrafted fabric.

If you are a beginner quilter this is a great quilt to practice sewing straight, consistent seams with. It will also help you with lining up simple points.

I just love the colors in this quilt and how they pop with each other.

This quilt is the small throw size. Which means it used 1 1/8 yard of each color of fabric. The finished size measures 56 in. x 64 in.

Generally I like a larger throw size. For this reason I included a large throw size with the pattern which finishes at 64 in. x 72 in. and uses 1 1/3 yard for each color of fabric.

Other sizes included in the pattern include baby, twin, queen and king.

If you are a beginner quilter the small throw is a good size to make, especially if you plan on quilting it your self. The larger the quilt size, the larger the bulk and more wrestling you will have to do when quilting it.

I happened to send this quilt out to my dear friend Kait from Knot and Thread Design. She helped me choose a panto for it called Bubble Clam Jam.

The pantograph's circular design works nicely with the squares and rectangles of this quilt.

I just love the feel of this quilt! If you want a quilt perfect for snuggling then you are going to love sewing with Khadi fabric.

Grab a small throw kit or a large throw size kit of to make your own version of this quilt with Khadi fabric.
