Today I'm going to share with you about my sunset inspired Jelly Heart Quilt. It was one of those quilts where while you're in the middle of it you're not sure how it will turn out. However, this turned out to be my favorite Jelly Heart Quilt to date!
First, what's the Jelly Heart Quilt Pattern? It's my modern, beginner friendly quilt pattern which uses Jelly Rolls (or fat quarters) to create a Valentines inspired quilt pattern. My favorite part of this pattern is there is very little trimming and mostly just easy strip piecing. It's a quick make!

My goal for this quilt was to try something I had never done before... make an ombre quilt. I have made a rainbow quilt and made a quilt with ombre blocks. But I have never made one that has a faded or ombre look throughout. Really I think this quilt turned out more like a sunset quilt.
Let me say I am not super great with colors. I am partially color blind. So I definitely don't see the difference in some colors. This can make these kind of quilts challenging. For this reason I used a curated bundle for my quilt.
I used a bundle I had bought a while ago and had in my stash. It's a bundle Brittany from Lo and Behold Stitchery had curated for Kona Fabrics. I love the different colors and hues throughout this bundle, or at least the ones I can see. :)
The bundle has the colors of a sunset which I love. Also, she has made lots of quilts with this bundle and has ideas on her website.
She has a great blogpost called "Tips for Creating an Ombre Quilt." This blog post was very helpful for deciding how I wanted to organize the fabrics and the general layout of the quilt. I will say I did rip some seams out as I sewed and changed some pieces around a couple times. It's definitely a slower sewing process when you want each color in the quilt in specific spot. Usually I like to randomly sew my blocks together and not worry too much about where they land in my quilt. So this kind of quilt takes more planning, but the forethought is definitely worth it.

A Bit About This Pattern
The Jelly Heart Quilt Pattern was written for the beginner quilter and was intended to be a fast make. For this reason the pattern uses Jelly Rolls (2 1/2 in. precut strips) so the cutting is reduced greatly. You can also sew the quilt using fat quarters, which is what I did in this case.
This pattern is a good pattern to practice your 1/4 inch consistent seam with. It's important to make sure your seams are consistent, or they won't meet up when the blocks are sewn together.
The Jelly Heart Pattern has two variations. This quilt was made using solid white fabric for the heart, however, you can make the heart with strips. See a version I made using this variation here.
Jelly Heart Quilt Pattern sizes and material requirements:
As I said, the Jelly Heart Quilt top comes together fast. I was able to make this in a couple days. We were about to leave on a trip to Goa, India when I finished it. So I took it along for some photos.

I quilted this quilt using my Janome Sewing Machine. I like this squiggle stitch, plus it's a pretty forgiving way to quilt if your quilting rows aren't completely straight.
This quilt was gifted to my oldest kid who came to visit us in India for her Christmas break from University. The quilt turned out nice and thick. I used some various yard cuts of green fabrics for the backing. Her favorite color is green and I had had the fabrics for a long time so I thought it was time to piece them into a backing.
Lately I have been trying to use old fabric for backings instead of buying backings. This is cost effective and is helping me slowly work through my fabric stash.
I think the layout of this quilt turned out great. Someone else might do it differently, but that's what quilting is all about.
This quilt was a bit hard to give away. But I'm happy my daughter has it. And she lives in Montana, so she could always use another quilt.
The Jelly Heart Quilt Pattern is perfect for any time of the year and is a great pattern to share with someone you love.
