The Cutest Scrappy Samina's Star Quilt

The Samina's Star Quilt Pattern is my modern quilt pattern which combines the four patch and sawtooth star quilt blocks. This is a great pattern for beginner quilters wanting to build skills and learn new blocks.

This pattern has one main accent fabric which runs throughout the whole quilt. When the blocks are sewn together, a secondary block forms. I love these kinds of quilt patterns. It's like a surprise quilt coming together.

Samina's Star is fat quarter friendly. This makes it easy to grab fabric from your stash, like I did for this quilt, or buy a fat quarter bundle at your favorite quilt shop.

You can find a copy of the Samina's Star Quilt Pattern here.

I made this Samina's Star Quilt a little different than the directions. I replaced the background fabric with various low volume cream and white fat quarters. This still gives a consistent background color, but adds so much more character to the quilt.

Let's talk about how I did it and how you can too!

First of all, the Samina's Star Quilt Pattern has 5 sizes (baby, throw, twin, queen and king). This quilt is a throw size which finishes at 60 in. x 72 in.

I love large throw quilts. For this reason I try to give an option of a large throw on each of my patterns.

Below you can see the fabric requirements for the pattern.

I chose all the fabrics for this quilt from my stash. These are from fabrics I had been hoarding for a long time. I used the kind of fabrics we quilters get and then are afraid to use because we love them so much and then realize after a couple years that the fabrics have been sitting collecting dust.

I decided it was time to cut into them and make a quilt I really loved.

I'm drawn to the sweet little designs on the fabrics above and how the colors all work together. These are a combination of Art Gallery Fabrics, Ruby Star Society and possibly some other fabric companies as well.

After I chose the 10 fat quarter needed for the accents fabrics, I chose what is referred in the pattern to as Fabric A (this is the main accent fabric which carries all through the quilt).

The coral fabric was my choice partly because I had enough of the fabric in my stash and partly because coral is my favorite color.

Next, I needed to choose a variety of low volume cream or white prints to use as background fabric. They just needed to add up to a combined total of 3 1/4 yards.

Low volume means there isn't much pattern to the fabrics, or if there is it blends in significantly with the main color of the fabric.

You can see above, all the cream fabrics I chose which have some patterns to them. Some have more patterns than others. Some fabrics are fat quarters and some are yardage. I didn't choose an equal amount of each fabric. I just chose a variety and cut the smaller pieces of fabric first then filled in the remaining needed from the yardage.

I think all together the fabrics have a real cheerful vibe, which I love.

The Samina's Stars Quilt Pattern is written for the advanced beginner. It incorporates the four patch, square in a square and half square triangle blocks. These blocks are all great skill building blocks.

I made sure to use each background fabric on a combination of all the piecing units in the quilt. This way each fabric would carry all the way through.

I made some mistakes on a couple blocks and flipped some half square triangles. So out came the seam ripper. It was just when I thought I had all the blocks done. Don't you hate that?!?

If you haven't ever sewn a square in a square before, I have a tutorial to help you out here

I wrote a blog post with some basic tips on how to sew a Samina's Stars Quilt. You can find that here

Look how cute those blocks are! I did not even try to keep the corner pieces going one direction. I wasn't sure how it would look when all put together, but I think it looks great!

Here I am with my finished top!

All said this quilt took me about 9 months to make, starting from when I pulled the fabric to when I put in the last stitch. So don't think I'm over here getting a quilt done all the time.

Samina's Stars is not a quick make. With all the half square triangles, it takes a while to trim and piece this quilt. It's well worth all the effort if you ask me.

I just loved this quilt top so much so I sent it to my friend Kait at Knot and Thread Design. She suggested the panto Honey, Honey. It is the cutest! The pantograph is full of rainbows and flowers. You can see it well on the backing below.

Below you can see the whole quilt below. I bound the quilt with the same fabric I used for the Fabric A.

So far this is my favorite Samina's Star Quilt to date!
