The Easy Going Solid Wovens Quilt

Sometimes I get tired of piecing small, detailed quilts together. Or I just want a more clean, modern quilt with less piecing. The Easy Going Star Quilt is both of these. Beautiful star design, modern, simple look with large blocks. There is minimal trimming, yet, you still come away with a quilt you will love and others will admire.

The Easy Going Quilt Pattern is a modern quilt pattern beginner and experienced quilters will love. Its large blocks make it an easy and quick make. Beginner quilters get a chance to work on half square triangles, while not mind numbingly trimming hundreds of them. I mean, that's a win in my world!

Usually when I design a star pattern I tend to make a repeating design. However, the stars in this pattern are too large to repeat and most don't even fit all the way in the quilt. It gives the impression of the stars escaping the quilt or the frame of a picture.

Folded woven fabrics in pink, magenta, gray, yellow, blue, purple, teal and orange arranged on a wooden table.
When choosing the fabrics for this quilt I went with all woven fabric. Most are made by Fabelism or Essex Linen. I like to try to keep the fabrics in my quilts generally the same. So I wouldn't mix a tighter weave of fabric with a loose hand woven fabric.

I also tried to use as much as possible from my stash, which I was able to pull most of the fabrics from. I think I needed to buy 2 fabrics for this quilt from the local quilt shop.

The Easy Going Quilt Pattern uses yardage. So it's not quite as easy as say a fat quarter quilt to get fabrics for. You can see the fabric requirements below to get an idea.

The Easy Going Star Quilt is made up of mostly half square triangles, but they are so large the sewing and trimming goes quickly. Extra wiggle room is included for trimming. I found that especially when using a fabric with a looser weave, trimming the large half square triangles could get a little tricky. It was easier if the blocks were slightly over sized.

After these half square triangles are finished and the quilt is laid out, the magic of sewing the rows together starts.

This quilt is a throw size, which finishes at 60 in. x 70 in. That's just about the perfect size throw if you ask me.

I had Kaitlyn from Knot and Thread Design quilt this. I am so glad I did! I think adding the detailed quilting really added to the quilt. Because there isn't very much piecing, the quilting adds a whole other element to the quilt and completed it in a way I couldn't do at home. She used the pantograph Rainbow Sprouts.

Look at that beautiful quilting! I always let Kaitlyn choose the thread color and the scale of the quilting.

One thing I love about these woven fabrics is they have this lovely texture to them. Several of them use different color thread for the warp and weft of the fabric. That's the thread which goes horizontal and vertical. This gives the appearance of a solid fabric, but when you get up close the fabric has the most beautiful colors, and subtle design going through it.

The backing for this quilt is by Fabelism Fabrics and I used scraps from the accent fabrics to make the binding.

Tips for making your Easy Going Star Quilt:

  • Two colors make up each star, make sure to choose different colors that work together, but also stand out from each other.
  • Think ahead if you are using large scale prints and how you will be cutting them up. For instance, Fabrics 4 and 8 are not divided into smaller pieces. So these would be good to use for small panels or large prints.

  • The half square triangles in the larger quilt sizes are big! If you don't have a square ruler large enough for trimming, use the 45 degree line on your cutting mat as a guide.

  • Keep your fabrics organized by labeling or sewing them to a piece of paper. I made a sheet that really helped me because I kept forgetting which fabric went where. Download it here.
