The Novice Quilt Pattern
56 in. x 64 in.
|10 Fat Quarters|
|Batting||62 in. x 70 in.|
I made this infographic for beginning quilters to help remember what all those abbreviations mean:
Turn each FQ verticle in front of you.
Cut 3 - 5 1/2 in. strips from each FQ.
Subcut each strip into 2 - 5 1/2 in. x 10 in. pieces.
Each FQ makes 6 - 5 1/2 in. x 10 in. pieces
Cut 8 - 3 in. x WOF
- Cut selvage off ends
- Subcut 2 strips into 3 - 14 inch pieces/strips
Piecing the Quilt
Arrange 11 - 5 1/2 in. x 10 in. pieces in a row (Figure 1). Make sure they are in the order you want them in your quilt. Sew the blocks together. Press seams in one direction. Repeat the process with all 5 rows. You will have 5 extra blocks.
Sew each 3 in. x WOF together with a 3 in. 14 in. strip. Press seam to one side.
Arrange rows in desired order (Figure 2).
Starting from the top sew the rows together. Make sure that the seams from each row of blocks line up with the seams from the row of blocks above (Figure 3). You can do this by checking as you pin each row, or by marking where the seam should be with a fabric friendly pen.
