The Samina's Stars Quilt With Speckled Fabric

Today I'm here to share my Samina's Star Quilt which I made using a bright and cheerful fabric line. I also have some tips for you when choosing your fabrics and and sewing your own version.

The Samina's Stars Quilt Pattern is a fat quarter friendly pattern perfect for the advanced beginner quilter. This is a great pattern to upgrade your quilting skills and try new quilting blocks. The pattern includes the four patch, square in a square block and many half square triangles.

You can buy your copy of the Samina's Star Quilt Pattern here

Samina's Stars includes five sizes:

  • Baby 36 in. x 48 in.

  • Throw 60 in. x 72 in.

  • Twin 72 in. x 96 in.

  • Queen 96 in. x 108 in.

  • King 108 in. x 108 in.

This pattern uses fat quarters, another main accent fabric (Fabric A) and the background fabric.

I love fat quarter quilt patterns because it makes choosing fabrics easy if you have commitment issues or if you struggle with colors like I do. I like to have various fat quarter bundles in my stash already curated so I can easily grab them when I'm ready to start a new quilt.

If you haven't sewn a square in a square block before this is a great pattern to learn. You can read a tutorial on How to Sew a Square in a Square Block here

I suggest practicing the block a couple times to get the hang of it before you start sewing with the fabrics for your quilt. I always do this when I'm learning a new block or skill.

Samina's Stars does have a good bit of half square triangles (HSTs). I decided to do HSTs instead of flying geese because I have heard from several people who prefer HSTs. But also, this allows you to play with the colors in each block as you assemble them.

Don't be afraid of HSTs. I like to bring my small cutting mat to the kitchen table or wherever my family is hanging out and do my trimming in between teaching kids and chores.

I realized when sewing this quilt that my HSTs are more accurate when I trim them with the Clearly Perfect Slotted Ruler. If you don't have this ruler I highly suggest it! The ruler has multiple sizes so it will assist you in most your HST trimming needs.

I think both prints and solids look good with the Samina's Stars Pattern.

My first version of Samina's Stars was made with solid fabrics. So I decided to choose a blender fabric which wasn't directional for this version.

I just love the Speckled Fabric line by Ruby Star Society. The colors are so bright and and easy to pull into a bundle or quilt, so it was the perfect fabric to make a Samina's Stars Quilt with! In fact, I was able to pull all the fabric for this quilt pretty quickly at my local quilt shop.

It's easy to use Speckled Fabric in a variety of quilts because it is a great blender and isn't directional. This makes it kind of a no brainer to sew with.

For this version of Samina's Stars I made the throw size which calls for 10 fat quarters. When choosing my fabrics I started with these. After I had 10 colors I thought went together pretty well, I chose the background and Fabric A (main accent) of the quilt.

The last Samina's Star Quilt I made had a white background fabric (read about that quilt here), for this reason I really wanted to choose a different color. The Speckled in pink was still a soft background fabric, but not white and added some extra color to the quilt.

I suggest choosing your fat quarters first for this quilt, then adding the accent and background.

It's important when choosing your fabrics to make sure they all go together, and the Fabric A blends well with the other colors. But, the key to this quilt is to make sure the Fabric A doesn't stand out too much from the other fabrics. If it's too dark or bright compared to the others then it will take the focus off the four patches and the stars.

Samina's Stars includes 3 slightly different blocks. I know it may look like there are a lot of points to match up, but if you HST trimming is accurate then the points sort of come together themselves.

I love when the blocks start to come together and you get to see how they will look when sewn together.

Sewing this quilt top together was so fun!

The throw size of Samina's Stars is on the large size for a throw. I like my throw quilts to be big.

I sent this quilt top out to be quilted by Kaitlyn from Knot and Thread Design. She does the best quilting! She helped me choose this panto which is called 6 Petal Flower.

I purchased the backing fabric for this quilt from Sewtopia. It's called Maeve Mushroom Moths in Mandarin by Crystal Manning for Moda Fabrics.

The snails and colors are so cute and I just fell in love with the fabric when I saw it.

Samina's Quilt Pattern is a great quilt pattern for growing your quilt skills or for those looking for a fat quarter friendly make.
