The Spring Fling Mismatched Stars and Stripes Quilt

Mismatched Stars and Stripes is one of the first patterns I ever wrote and it has stood the test of time. It's still a customer favorite. It's also beginner and fat quarter friendly. I've made several versions over the years, but this one has to be up there as one of my favorites.

The Mismatched Stars and Stripes Quilt Pattern was written for the advanced beginner quilter. This block based quilt pattern includes flying geese blocks and strip piecing. If you haven't ever learned these sewing skills then this is a great pattern to learn with!

You can buy the same fat quarter bundle I used here

This pattern doesn't include any trimming which is a major plus! It uses the stitch and flip method of flying geese which I think is a good beginner friendly way to learn this quilting block. This also means there is no trimming! Yay!

The Mismtached Stars and Stripes Pattern includes three sizes:

  • Baby 32 in. x 40 in.
  • Throw 48 in. x 64 in.
  • Twin 72 in. x 96 in.

In order to make the pattern go faster the striped blocks are sewn using strip piecing. This is when you cut strips of fabric and sew them together into long pieces. Then, cut those pieces into smaller pieces. It saves time instead of sewing lots of tiny pieces of fabric together.

I really love that this pattern is compatible with a Jelly Roll (2 1/2 inch precut strips).  I have made it before using an all white Jelly Roll for the background fabric as the pattern lists.

I have also made this pattern swapping the fabrics and making what is listed as the background fabric, the accent fabric (in this case I used a Jelly Roll) and using yardage to replace the fat quarters. I makes the quilt look completely different.

Back To This Quilt...

I decided it was time to make a another Mismatched Stars and Stripes after I curated a bundle of fabrics inspired by spring. These fabrics all come from India and are absolutely beautiful! I love the pinks, purples and yellows with the combination of large and small prints with flowers and geometric prints.

I brought a large cut of teal chambray fabric with me from India. The fabrics are made by hand and I love supporting local artisans. This soft fabric made the perfect background fabric.

All the fabric in this quilt is 100% cotton. It came together so nice. I love the pinks especially.

The light weight chambray gave the quilt top a very nice flow to it.

I just fell in love with this quilt top and decided to send it out to be quilted by Kaitlyn from Knot and Thread Design

I even had a panto in mind I had seen used on another quilt at Quilt Con. It's called Mirage.

You can't really tell in the photos, but Kaitlyn used a bright yellow thread, per my request, to do all the quilting. It adds a little extra element of character to the quilt.

I used left over scraps to make the binding for this quilt. It makes such a cute finishing touch. Plus, it's free!

Mismatched Stars and Stripes is a great pattern for the beginner quilter wanting to grow their skills. It's easy and doesn't have any trimming. If you looking for a fun, modern pattern to work on, this is it! Grab your pattern or your fabric bundle while they last.
