Tips on Sewing Your Samina's Stars Quilt

The Samina's Stars Quilt Pattern is my modern quilt pattern for the advanced beginner quilter. Which means if you have quilted a bit before it's a great pattern to build some skills. If you an absolute new quilter, it's probably not the right pattern for you.

If you are a bit new to quilting and consider Samina's Stars a challenge this blog post is for you! I've got some tips to help you on your way.

First, Samina's Stars isn't a quick make. So don't think you are going to sit down and bust it out in a day or weekend. This pattern is for those who want take the time to really make something beautiful and aren't in a time crunch. It's important to make sure you spend time accurately trimming your half square triangles and getting your points lined up.

Second, when you are sewing your 8 at a time half square triangles go slow to make sure you are getting consistent seams. I have found when I am in too much of a hurry or a bit distracted my sewing isn't as straight on these. When I go to trim them they turn out a bit wonky. So slow down and keep the seams straight.

Third, and this is probably the most important step, get those crisp points throughout the quilt, trim your half square triangles accurately. I prefer to use the Clearly Perfect Slotted Ruler. I find my half square triangles turn out better when I trim them with this ruler. However, use whatever method you finds works best for you, just make sure they are all consistent!

Fourthly, when sewing your half square triangles together, line up the seams of the half square triangles, and sew over them first. This will give you a good point before the half square triangles have a chance to shift.

Lastly, when attaching your blocks and then rows together, use pins! I generally don't pin alot, but anytime something needs to be lined up or a point needs to be matched I definitely use a pin. The best way to get your rows to match and your blocks to come together is to pin each seam and intersection.

I hope these tips helped and your Samina's Stars turns out beautiful! Feel free to share your version with me by tagging me on Instagram: @thenomadicquilter
