Samina's Stars with a Purple Background!

Today I'm here to share about my modified Samina's Stars Quilt. I say modified because I made it a different size than the pattern lists. But, otherwise it's the same modern star blocks and pattern.

Samina's Stars is my fat quarter friendly quilt pattern written for the advanced beginner quilter. It's a great pattern to work on your half square triangles, four patch and square in a square blocks.

It's a great pattern for a quilter who has sewn some beginner patterns and wants something that is a little more challenging, but which doesn't have any tricky quilting skills required.

I love a quick quilt pattern. Samina's Stars isn't one of them. I'll be honest, there is quite a bit of trimming of half square triangles. If I have the time, trimming half square triangles, to me, is always worth the final result. However, they can also be time consuming.

I wanted to sew a Samina's Stars Quilt using a bundle of fabric I curated from India (Find that bundle here). The bundle has the perfect number of fat quarters to make the throw size Samina's Stars Quilt.

The throw size listed in the pattern is on the large size because I love a large throw quilt.

I didn't have a ton of time for all the trimming required, but wanted to make a Samina's Stars with this bundle. So I compromised. I made a smaller version, but still included all the fabrics (which means I had some scraps left).

The pattern lists the throw size as measuring 60 in. x 72 in. with 5 blocks x 6 blocks and uses 10 fat quarters.

I used the 10 piece fat quarter bundle and made this quilt measure 48 in. x 60 in. with 4 blocks x 5 blocks. So it still came out a nice throw size, but reduced my work.

I could have reduced the number of fat quarters in the quilt and saved fabric. But I always tend to like more accent fabrics than not. So I stuck with all 10 fabrics and just lessened the cuts from each fat quarter.

I chose a purple/lavender background color and a green second fabric (Fabric B), which is the main accent throughout the quilt.

These are bold colors and against my usual inclination to choose white or cream as the background color. But I decided to go big or go home.

It happens that the fabrics I chose were woven fabrics made in India, so it goes perfectly with my other fabrics from India.

I loved watching the blocks come together in the quilt. The four patch square in a square blocks turned out perfect.

If you have never made a square in a square block have no fear. I have a tutorial for you here. The most important thing is to have an accurate 1/4 inch seam and make sure you center the triangles of your backing fabric to the four patches before beginning sewing.

It may appear overwhelming to a beginner quilter to get all the points lined up on the Samina's Star Quilt. But really the work is in the trimming. It you trim everything to size and have a consistent seam then the points all kind of magically line up.

If you are interested in sewing your own Samina's Stars Quilt there are several sizes included in the pattern:

  • Baby 36 in. x 48 in.
  • Throw 60 in. x 72 in.
  • Twin 72 in. x 96 in.
  • Queen 96 in. x 108 in.
  • King 108 in. x 108 in.

Each size is fat quarter friendly.

If you want to read about some other Samina's Stars Quilts you can find info on the one made with Speckled Fabric here, or my first Samina's Stars Quilt here. I also have a blog post with some helpful tips on sewing your own here.

I sent this quilt top out to be quilted by Kaitlyn from Knot and Thread Design. She suggested the Vienna Pantograph for this quilt.

The binding is sewn from the red floral fabrics included in this quilt. It adds a nice pop and continues the color all the way to the edge. I backed the quilt with a bright pink tiger fabric from India. I love this print and even made a bundle out of the prints because I love it so much. You can find the Tiger Bundle here

This modified Samina's Stars Quilt turned out to be the perfect throw size for the couch. It's great for watch TV. It's not overly large and was just perfect for what I wanted.

Samina's Stars is a great pattern for building your quilting skills, but also provides a variety of sizes to please any quilter.
